چکیده

We present a generic exact method for minimizing the project duration of the resource-constrained project scheduling problem with generalized precedence relations (Rcpsp/max). This is a very general scheduling model with applications areas such as project management and production planning. Our method uses lazy clause generation, i.e., a hybrid of finite domain and Boolean satisfiability solving, in order to apply nogood learning and conflict-driven search to the solution generation. Our experiments show the benefit of lazy clause generation for finding an optimal solution and proving its optimality in comparison to other state-ofthe-art exact and non-exact methods. In comparison to other methods, our method is able to find better solutions faster on the Rcpsp/max benchmarks. Indeed our method closes 573 open problem instances and generates better solutions in most of the remaining instances. Surprisingly, although ours is an exact method, it outperforms the published non-exact methods on these benchmarks in terms of the quality of solutions.

Modeling and Solving Project Scheduling with Calendars

Resource-constrained project scheduling with the objective of minimizing project duration (RCPSP) is one of the most studied scheduling problems. In this paper we consider the RCPSP with general temporal constraints and calendar constraints. Calendar constraints make some resources unavailable on certain days in the scheduling period and force activity execution to be delayed while resources ar...

Lazy Clause Generation Reengineered

Lazy clause generation is a powerful hybrid approach to combinatorial optimization that combines features from SAT solving and finite domain (FD) propagation. In lazy clause generation finite domain propagators are considered as clause generators that create a SAT description of their behaviour for a SAT solver. The ability of the SAT solver to explain and record failure and perform conflict di...

Lazy Clause Generation: Combining the Power of SAT and CP (and MIP?) Solving

Finite domain propagation solving, the basis of constraint programming (CP) solvers, allows building very high-level models of problems, and using highly specific inference encapsulated in complex global constraints, as well as programming the search for solutions to take into account problem structure. Boolean satisfiability (SAT) solving allows the construction of a graph of inferences made i...

Scheduling Optional Tasks with Explanation

Many scheduling problems involve reasoning about tasks which may or may not actually occur, so called optional tasks. The state-ofthe-art approach to modelling and solving such problems makes use of interval variables which allow a start time of ⊥ indicating the task does not run. In this paper we show we can model interval variables in a lazy clause generation solver, and create explaining pro...
